Founded in 1961 at California Lutheran University by Dr. Robert Zimmerman, Professor Betty Bowen, and Walter Burkedahl, as an ensemble for the students at the university. The very first rehearsals took place in an old farmhouse, rumored to be a converted chicken coop, on the college campus. By 1983 if finally became The Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra, and now consists of the Youth Strings, the most junior ensemble ranging in size from 60 to 90 players. The Flore Ensemble, ranging in size from 20 to 30 players, and the extension of Youth Strings. The Preparatory Orchestra, the full symphonic orchestra and home to experienced string players, and our most junior wind, brass, and percussion players, ranging in size from 60 to 80 players. The Symphony Orchestra, home to the most experienced string, wind, brass, and percussion players in the program, and the flagship ensemble of the organization, ranging in size from 70 to 90 players. And the Virtuosi, a chamber orchestra composed primarily of the principal players of the Symphony Orchestra.
The mission of CVYO is to inspire youth through music: to enrich the current and future lives of young musicians through the unique experience of orchestral music.
