Following the story of two young women known as Roxie Hart, a dreaming vaudeville dancer who took the life of her lover, and Velma Kelly, who likewise ended the lives of her husband and sister after uncovering their secret relationship. The production is the second most frequent performance ever to be presented on Broadway, surpassed only by "The Phantom of the Opera". The Show tells the story of two competing vaudevillian performers named Velma and Roxie imprisoned in jail for murder.
While Velma is already a well-known vaudevillian entertainer, Roxie is a aspiring performer trying to create her career. Although they both were convicted of murder, they had different motives. Velma's motive was jealousy and rage after finding her husband and sister having an affair. On the other hand, Roxie's motive was abandonment, manipulation, and desperation. Thus, unlike Velma's action, which was driven by passion, Roxie's scheme was calculated, and was intentionally used to draw notoriety.
In between, Chicago also exposes the secret game played by the justice system and civilians. Roxie's and Velma's lawyer Billy Flynn, who excels at defending women prisoners charged of murder is seen transforming courtroom proceedings into theatrical events, by altering his clients' hearing into sensational shows composed of excitement and sympathy.
Meanwhile, Matron "Mama" Morton is seen aiding the two felons establish a connection with the outside world, mainly with Billy, and exploiting the other criminals for her advantage.
