Happening largely in the time span preceding and during the widespread rebellion in 1832 in Paris, Les Misérables is the story of Jean Valjean, a local of France who was convicted for close to 20 years as a consequence of a small act of theft for his nephew. After his release on parole, he breaks free and searches for a new life free from the law; Valjean then takes on a different name as Monsieur Madeleine, while still hiding from the law and Javert, an officer loyal to the letter of the law and determined to catch and bring Valjean to justice.
Happening over a period of roughly two decades across the musical's two acts, Valjean becomes involved through fated encounters with several important characters throughout the musical – Fantine is one of his factory employees who is the mother of an illegitimate infant; Cosette is the adoptive daughter of Monsieur Madeleine, who by no surprise Fantine’s baby; Marius, a young local fighting for the insurgency and the true love of Cosette. Side roles shown in Les Misérables include the Thénardiers, immoral proprietors who think only of themselves and are obsessed with taking advantage of the chaos; Eponine, their daughter, who is desperately infatuated with for Marius; and supporters of the government opposition specifically Gavroche, a young but cunning child, and the revolt’s fearless leader, Enjolras.
This motley cast of characters who meet by fate and their individual hardships are brought to life on a live platform, not just with the musical's 1800s French-based outfit and prop creations, but principally with Les Misérables being sung-through fully from the first to last line of the play. With iconic numbers including “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as highlights of its magnificent song list, the heart-stopping show is able to communicate the emotion, passion, and tragedy beneath each and every character that comes to life in the theater.
